Cyprus. Crossroads of civilizations

Museo Reale di Torino, Sala Chiablese, Turin, Italy
29 Jun 2021- 9 Jan 2022

An extraordinary exhibition curated by Luca Bombardieri and Elisa Panero celebrates the immense archaeological heritage represented by the objects on display. The exhibition highlights the Cypriot collection of the Musei Reali, which today comprises more than 1,000 artefacts. This collection is the oldest public assemblage of Cypriot antiquities outside the island and is likely also the most chronologically comprehensive.
Introduced by contributions from Dario Franceschini, Italian Minister of Culture; Minas Hadjimichael, Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus; Andrea Cavallari, Ambassador of Italy to Cyprus; and Enrica Pagella, Director of the Musei Reali of Turin, the exhibition reaffirms Italy’s international standing as a cradle of civilisation – an image that has recently been overshadowed by the global health emergency.
Through a rich display of archaeological material and striking visual documentation, the exhibition offers new insights into the history of Cyprus, tracing the island’s cultural evolution during the Classical period. Long celebrated for its ceramic production, Cypriot civilisation also pursued ideals of beauty, as evidenced by statues dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite. Emphasising rigorous historical methodology and the reconstruction of ancient contexts, the exhibition stands as an important point of reference for an international audience of scholars and visitors alike.
